The State Bar of California has announced that the October 2025 First-Year Law Students’ Exam (FYLSX) will take place on October 28, 2025. This exam is primarily to be administered in person at Prometric centers; however, there will be options for remote testing available on a case-by-case basis. The FYLSX consists of 100 multiple-choice questions designed to assess knowledge across critical foundational subjects including Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts, and notably includes 25 new pretested questions which are significant for validating the future exam content.
The decision to provide a hybrid format, accommodating both in-person and remote testing options, acknowledges the evolving landscape of legal education and exam administration due to various factors including pandemic-related challenges. Now, prospective law students must prepare not only for the content of the exam but also for the nuances of the exam format. Resources, such as bar prep courses and workshops, are crucial for ensuring candidates maximize their performance.
California's First-Year Law Students' Exam is often the first introduction to the rigorous standards expected throughout a legal education. Candidates should focus on developing a solid understanding of the three tested subjects through comprehensive review courses and practice exams. This thorough preparation is vital, as performance on the FYLSX can impact future opportunities in law school, including eligibility to sit for the California Bar Exam after completing law school.
As California law students prepare for the upcoming FYLSX, it is essential for them to utilize available resources effectively and engage with the law school community. Staying informed on testing logistics and content will enable candidates to approach the exam with confidence, paving the way for their legal careers.
